The Author Behind CallaghanVerse

CallaghanVerse is built around one protagonist and one theme: systems don’t arrive fully formed; they accumulate until they feel inevitable.

About the Author

Stephen Kennard is the author of the Callaghan Trilogy — three interconnected novels following Maeve Callaghan across different worlds and different life stages, connected by a single thread: what happens when the systems built to protect people start doing something else entirely.

Before writing fiction, Stephen spent thirty years in IT and defence contracting. That background shapes everything in the trilogy. The surveillance architectures, compliance infrastructure, and data systems in Providence 2025 are grounded in how these things actually work. The research tagline is That’s Not Fiction, That’s Tuesday.

“Same trauma, different interpretations.”

Ask The System is a reference interface embedded in this site, trained on the author’s research and draft material for Providence 2025. It answers factual and contextual questions about the CallaghanVerse — and says clearly when something isn’t in the corpus.

The Universe

The Road Between — A fantasy journey through ancient woodland. Maeve must choose between the Path of Light and the Path of Shadow — but the safe path holds hidden dangers, and the dangerous one offers genuine growth. Nothing is quite what it seems. Complete draft

Providence 2025 — Bristol, December 2025. Compliance analyst Maeve Callaghan discovers fragments of her brother Liam’s data inside a synthetic citizen profile that should not exist. Following the anomaly draws her into the connections between supposedly separate systems — and forces her to question how much can be controlled once everything is built to work together. Complete draft — in reader review.

Tales from the Grid — Post-collapse survival. The final book in the Callaghan Trilogy, exploring the world that remains when the systems fail permanently. Concept phase.

Providence 2025

Bristol, December 2025. Maeve Callaghan audits the systems that increasingly shape everyday life — healthcare, employment, transport, education and the quiet exchange of data between them. She believes good oversight can make powerful technology safer.

Then fragments of her brother Liam’s data appear inside a synthetic citizen profile that should not exist. What begins as an anomaly in an audit trail leads Maeve towards a much larger question: how many supposedly separate systems have already been built to work together, and who is accountable when nobody appears to control the whole?

AI Transparency

I use AI-assisted tools as part of my writing and development process.

That can include research support, structural analysis, continuity checking, brainstorming, editing assistance, and testing different ways of presenting material. Tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Sudowrite have all formed part of that process at different stages.

The real-world research behind the books is genuine. I visit locations, draw on my own professional experience, check how systems and organisations actually work, and use that material to ground the fiction before AI tools are brought into the process.

They do not replace authorship.

The stories, characters, world, themes and final creative decisions are mine. Every suggestion is reviewed, rejected, rewritten or reshaped as needed, and the finished work reflects my own judgement and voice.

For me, AI is another tool in the creative process — useful, sometimes surprising, occasionally wrong, and always something that needs human judgement.

I prefer to be open about using it.
